It's amazing how quickly children grow up, isn't it? My daughter recently told me she wants to give her bedroom a more mature look, which made me stop and think about how fast time flies. Even when they're all grown up, they'll always be our "little ones." But I must admit, when I looked at her room, I saw pastel yellow walls, stuffed animals, fairy princess art, and paintings from kindergarten. I think it's time for a change too. So, I was wondering, how about your teen? Have they expressed any interest in redoing their room lately?
Maybe your teen has mentioned wanting a more grown-up, or sophisticated space from their current little kid bedroom. It's really important to give them a place where they can feel safe and happy as they grow up and become adults. I'm working with my amazing daughter to create a super cool bedroom that gives her a peaceful and relaxing vibe. The room is all about her unique interests, hobbies, and dreams. It's a cozy, artistic, and inviting space that lets her be herself and show off her amazing personality.
Remember to involve your amazing teenager in the redecorating process of their room. Collaborate with them and ask for their input regularly. Why not encourage them to get their hands dirty and let their creativity flow? By doing so, their personality and style can truly shine through, creating a space they'll love spending time in.
Here are 10 tips and tricks to think about to get the ball rolling.
1.) Determine the Theme or Style: Have a conversation with your teenager about their interests, hobbies, and favorite colors to help determine a theme or style for their room. Did you know that the style of a room can say a lot about a person? Whether they like a minimalist look, a bohemian vibe, or something more retro, the room can reflect their personality in a unique way. Maybe they are into sports or love movies, music, or even comic books - there are so many styles out there!
2.) Create a Mood/Inspiration Board: Browse through magazines, websites, and social media platforms like Pinterest or Instagram, and create a collection of images that inspire them. Look for styles, color schemes, and decor elements that resonate with your teenager's tastes and preferences. This will help you see how everything comes together and make changes before finalizing the theme or style. I find the easiest way to do this is to pin any digital collection of items to a Pinterest board where you can easily access it from anywhere. This way when you get to the point of going out and shopping for their room, their mood board and theme/style are ready at your fingertips.
3.) Choose Color Schemes: When it comes to choosing colors, it's always best to keep in mind the theme or style they're going for. You can mix and match with your teen's favorite colors, go for more neutral shades, or even add some bold accents to really make the room pop! Keep in mind that colors can significantly impact the overall mood and ambiance of the room. If you want to make it more of a relaxing, and serene space try sticking to neutrals, and soft color tones, such as pastels.
4.) Set a Budget: Establish a budget for the redecoration project. This will help you prioritize and make informed decisions about where to allocate your resources. This definitely isn't the most fun part, but it is crucial in keeping everyone on the same page financially, but it teaches valuable math skills and also helps with important life skills in the future.
5.) Assess the Current Space: Take a look at the existing furniture, decor, and layout of the room. Determine what items can be kept, repurposed, or donated. Taking a look at the dimensions and layout of the space can help you plan for any changes or adjustments that may be necessary. Grab a tape measure, a notepad, pencil, or digital note taker, and record all the things. Trust me you won't remember all of them and this will come in handy later on.
6.) Plan the Layout: Consider the functional aspects of the room and plan the layout accordingly. Determine where the bed, desk, storage, seating, rugs, and other essential items will be placed. Ensure that the layout maximizes space and provides a comfortable, calm, balanced, and functional environment. If your teen is an artisit perhaps ask them to draw out the new layout.
7.) Make a Wishlist: Sit down with your teenager and create a wishlist together. Ask them what specific elements or features they would like to see in their new bedroom. This could include furniture, lighting, wall decor, storage solutions, or any other items you can think of together. Remember the more decisions you make together can lead to better bonding, trust, and enjoyable time spent together.
8.) Explore Furniture and Decor Options: Research furniture and decor options that fit the desired theme and budget. Look for versatile and functional pieces that provide both style and practicality. Consider exploring DIY projects or repurposing existing items to add a unique touch. Repurposing is my favorite part because you both get to be creative and make unique pieces. Repurposed pieces are new to the space, but carry memories from the past and can become family treasures.
9.) Consider Storage Solutions: It's really helpful to have practical storage solutions when you're a teenager and have a lot of stuff to keep organized. Think about utilizing under-bed storage, wall shelves, closet organizers, or multifunctional furniture that provides hidden storage compartments.
10.) Incorporate Personalization: Allow your teenager to add their personal touch to the room. Is your teen an artist? Are they collectors of something or have cherished items? Consider displaying their artwork, photographs, collections, etc. Displaying their favorite things can boost their confidence and show the world who they are. Make that space their own!
I really think it's important for teenagers to make their bedroom their own as they grow up. It can have a big impact on how they feel and develop. A personalized and thoughtfully designed space allows our teenagers to express their individuality, creativity, and evolving identity. By allowing them to actively participate in the process of redecorating their bedroom, they gain a sense of ownership, independence, and empowerment, and we as parents want nothing more for them than to feel this way.
It's all about creating a space that truly reflects who they are and makes them feel comfortable and happy. So go ahead, let their awesome creativity shine!
